His probly hunting some secret guy thats more powerfull then the zanpaktou leader, and ichigo was just getting in his way. the charecter is set up too as too smart to be decived, and if he was to be decived the anime would usually focus on him allot more, not hide him in the background making us ask questions and doubting his loyalty, and really, that stunt with rukia, who with those subtle signs like saving her life occasionally obviously loves her to death, was still ready to cut off her head because of his idiotic "loyalty"

Id say it has to be a forrien element that will be introduced later with an omg factor.
